Paul Cullen’s series of drawings are in scripted with letters, lists, statements and numbers. We are reminded of mathematical and scientific theories.
This is something that Cullen exploits. In a recent interview in which he spoke about his installation at the Christchurch Art Gallery, he said, "Gravity is important because its one of those fascinating invisible things and because it has long been regarded as an essential concern in sculpture. It’s the weakest force in the universe and I read recently that its been suggested that this is because it leaks off into other dimensions. I haven’t the faintest idea what this means but I like it."
Cullen parallels the processes of art and science when he says,“I think to be interesting art should be a kind of 'testing ground'. What is being tested involves visual ideas rather than ideas necessarily able to be expressed in written or spoken language. For the viewer it should be a visual and spatial experience, which raises questions."
In the context of this exhibition as a whole and as individual works the viewer explores–the drawn objects, the text, the lists, the words i.e. “the sketch of the outward appearance”, the individual letters and numbers, all implied codes and must also explore the components of an artwork –composition, line, colour, and placement as well as what is not there, what is implied or left out.
